Founded by six lawyers, five barristers
and a solicitor in June 1836, Legal and General originally
restricted coverage to the legal profession. Nowadays it
has brought financial planning within the reach of everyone
by constantly extending the range of its products and services,
including life insurance, critical-illness cover, private
term assurance and private medical insurance and home insurance. As at June 2004,
it had £148 billion of clients' funds under management.
Today the company continues to offer a wide range of products
and has alliances to sell their insurance products to a wide
spectrum of customers. Presently car insurance is not a product they offer.
